We, the team of HOPE want to help the street dogs who are diseased and ill, want to control the street dog population and also help reduce number of rabies cases. We all are working members hence we tried our best to run the activity; however our continued efforts, exposure visits, trainings and attendance in various conferences strengthened our knowledge, spirit and also started getting some financial support.
In Spring and Summer of 2006, 3 of our volunteers and two Ranchi Municipal dogcatchers received training with Help In Suffering in Jaipur in all aspects of the ABC Programme. The dogcatchers were taught compounding and humane dog-catching methods as well as general animal care. One of the volunteer vet also trained in spay and neuter techniques, and Praveen Ohal learned about management and record-keeping.
Our facility is based at village Torankel in Khunti a nearest village approx 35 km from Ranchi. The distance and limited resources forced us to think on different line of action. Our learning through trainings and exposure visits for consecutive seven years taught us many lessons. So we merged the old and new concept of ABC and got the success in starting the program which should have been started seven years before and I think this is one of it’s kind in India, we are confident cause we run this activity differently.
Our concept and idea was based on minimum resources, hence it got accepted by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation and now they are partly funding the program. We achieved this success after Seven years, if we would not have taken this initiative, we do not know how many more years we could have waited to help the street dogs and control their population for their better living.
In September 2006 we signed MOU with the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) for Pet Dog Registration (License) under RMC Act 2001 - The pet dog registration work was carried until 31st March 2007 where 1100 registrations (Rs. 100/- per pet registration amounting Rs. 1,10,000.00) are recorded. In 2007 RMC continued the last MOU including the running of ABC program in Ranchi with the money raised through PET DOG REGISTRATION (License). This time we raised Rupees 77,000/- (until 31st March 2008)
In short we raised funds to run our ABC program in Ranchi.
First time on 29th September 2007, we started our ABC as a program with confidence to go on continuously atleast for a year.
After Completion of One year term we could manage to spay/ neuter 730 street dogs (Last updated - October 26, 2008).
The Winsome Constance Kindness Trust has provided support to buy Surgical Equipments and Administration for a year.
The Mayhew Animal Home also came forward to motivate the Pet owners by providing
free rabies vaccine against each registration. These efforts are
- To make people
aware/ educate and responsible towards their duties (respecting the law of having
license to keep the dogs).
- To create awareness about vaccinating their pets against
rabies and not make their pets breed.
- To generate funds for carrying out the ABC
program.
To overcome all the odds, we prepared an Action Plan based on CNVR technology. Though we do not have training in CNVR, however We planned and started setting up MOBILE Clinics at various Residential colonies. Here we request the community leaders for providing space for operations and Five movable kennels to keep the dogs for post operative care for two to three days as per the requirements.
We are getting success, media and people are talking about our ABC program. people and corporate houses are approaching us with assurance to provide space.

We are now seeking support from Animal Welfare Board of India to join hands with Ranchi Municipal Corporation to continue the efforts.
We are also looking for
Adopting more Advance Technology used for effective ABC program - like in catching, compounding and Veterinary Skills.Assistance in quality equipments A dog catching Vehicle and Ambulance for catching and operating dogs.
Also we would like to run an education programme simultaneously to make the people of Ranchi aware about our work and to encourage them to be kind, to adopt, to monitor and feed the dogs after their release.
