Journy to our ABC Program
2007 to 2009
A WORD FROM THEEDITOR
Year 2009 (so far) is struggling year for HOPE; for the first quarter of year 2009 we are extremely grateful, especially to Ms Eileen Weintraub of United States;
Like HOPE, many organisations are doing all they can to try to assist the desperate situation of the stray animals, but all this takes money. And so we ask that you donate whatever you can to our cause, even the few cents you may have in your pockets the day before payday:
Every cent goes towards our Animal Birth Control (ABC) program, and this can often actually mean the difference between living and dying— dying a slow, painful death as starvation eats away at your body. Please help us in this task—all will be appreciated.
Animal Birth Control Program in Ranchi
"Our Mission is Helping Animals to Help People - To achieve this broad mission objective HOPE & Animal Trust has, worked on identifying the best method:- A structure of a hospital in the village of Torankel, Khunti, around 40 km from Ranchi city, here, except large animals treatment and welfare, no program for the street dogs has been undertaken. The hospital has an operating theatre, 21 kennels and a shelter to keep large animals.
- After lot of discussions and talks with our members, volunteers and well wishers of the organisation – we decided that the site couldn’t be used for Ranchi ABC project. As it is far from the city with no communication means, moreover we came up with the best possible solution to carry on the Ranchi - urban ABC / Street Dog Management and care project with in the town area itself.
- But there was a hitch, Neither Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) nor the State Government taken any initiative to help control the growing population of the street dogs.
- Considering the RMC and State government’s stand and promise from The Mayhew Animal Home for the support in developing the IEC material and rabies vaccines. We designed two plans. First to convince the authorities to start the pet dog registration process and save the money for carrying out the ABC program and the second to explore the possibilities of running the ABC through CNVR method by setting up mobile camps at various residential colonies.
- Our concept and idea was based on minimum resources and a fund raising strategy. In India as per the law all the pet dogs should be registered with the City Municipal Corporation, hence it was easy to raise money.
- So, we put up the same proposal with RMC and that’s how the Ranchi Municipal Corporation accepted the program.
- We achieved this success after Seven years, if we would not have taken this initiative, we do not know how many more years we could have waited to help the street dogs and control their population for their better living.
- While we were raising funds for our ABC, our CEO, Mr. Praveen Ohal and members of the Mayhew International and The Winsome Kindness Constance Trust were exploring various possibilities to carry out ABC program in Ranchi. There were lots of ifs and buts;
- Mr. Ohal, a Veterinary Doctor and two of Ranchi Municipal corporation staff got the training in various aspects of ABC program, from catching to managing, at Help in Suffering at Jaipur. Mr. Ohal also visited quite a few locations to study the CNVR method including the Animal Help Foundation’s ABC program at Bangalore.
- In Ranchi there were lot of odd conditions but to overcome all the odds, we prepared an Action Plan based on CNVR (Catch – Neuter – Vaccinate – Release) technology. We planned and started setting up MOBILE Clinics at various Residential colonies in association with the Ranchi Municipal Corporation.
- Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) provided a man pulled Rickshaw (A tricycle with a cage) to catch the dogs with a driver and Three dog catchers.

THE PROJECT |
- We approach community members/ leaders/ association and request them for providing space to run the ABC program in their area. In this way the community members get involved.
- Our demand to the community members is to provide two- three rooms with provision of water, electricity and hygienic surroundings. In one of the rooms we keep our stuff, including medicines – that becomes our storeroom. Two rooms are used to keep operated dogs, When one is washed other is used.
- Once we get the space, we set-up our camp for at least three months. We transport the dogs in the man run rickshaw and move them to the temporary larger cage to be operated the next day.
- Our Dogcatchers, catch the street dogs in the same area and release healthy dogs after operation in the same area.
- Our Part time Veterinary Doctors are from the Veterinary College of Ranchi. Every day 7 to 9 – 30 in the morning we carry out operations.
- We cut part of the ear to identify the operated dogs. Generally males are released next day or after two days and females are always after three days or depending upon the health condition.
- The diseased dogs are euthanised (humanely killed) to prevent spreading of the disease or rabies amongst healthy dogs.
